Broken Key Extraction

The key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click. The bow is still between your fingers.

In plain words

Keys break for a reason, and finding that reason is half the visit. A brass key wears thinnest at its deepest cut, and after years of turning it fatigues there until a cold morning or a stiff bolt finishes it. Sometimes the lock is the culprit: grit in the keyway, a loose cap, worn pins, or a door that has dropped so the bolt binds and the key takes the strain. The extraction removes the piece; the inspection that follows tells you whether the lock needs a clean and lubricant, an adjustment, or a new cylinder, so it does not happen again next month.

The call
That key had been bending a little for years, and you kept straightening it. Today it finally cracked at the deepest cut. The stub is in the lock, and the spare you found goes in a few millimetres and stops against it.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

Reading the cylinder for the cause

Even a lock in good order can break a key that was already worn, bent or fatigued, so the cylinder is examined for a contributing cause all the same. The locksmith looks for grit and salt crust in the keyway, a cylinder cap that has loosened and let the plug shift, pins that have worn flat so the key needs force to lift them, springs that have weakened, and burrs at the mouth of the keyway that drag on the blade. On an exterior door the strike and hinges are checked as well, since a bolt that binds in its pocket makes the key carry the load. Each finding shapes the advice given once the fragment is out.

  2. Scene 2

Cutting the key you leave with

Once the lock is clear, a replacement key is made. The two halves of the broken key are laid together and the cuts are read with a key gauge, or the locksmith cuts from the key code if you have the tag or the lock's records, or from a crisp spare. What is avoided is copying a worn original, because a duplicate inherits every rounded cut and will stick and wear the same way. The new key is cut on a code machine, tried in the lock with the door open, then closed, and from both sides. Extra copies are cut from the new key while the machine is set.

  3. Scene 3

A cylinder that has been looked after

Extraction usually doubles as a service. The keyway has been blown clear of grit and salt, the pins and springs checked for wear, the cylinder cap snugged if it had loosened, and dressed with the lubricant its maker specifies rather than a one-size-fits-all product, since some cylinders take a dry graphite or PTFE spray and others forbid graphite outright. General household oils and sprays commonly collect dust and clog the pin chambers. A puff of the right lubricant twice a year, spring and fall, keeps the cylinder turning freely, and a key that starts to need force is an early message worth acting on before it breaks.

What shapes the quoteTamarac Estates Locksmith Specialists

Where the key broke
A house deadbolt, a knob, an older mortise case, a padlock, a car door and a vehicle ignition each call for different access and different care, and the quote follows the hardware.
How the new key is made
Cutting from a key code or a crisp spare, decoding the two halves with a gauge, or cutting a restricted blank from system records each take different time and stock.
How deep the fragment sits
A piece standing above the cylinder face is the simplest case. One flush with the face or deep behind the pins takes longer, finer work with hooks and spirals, and the quote reflects that.

Short answers to common questions

Will the lock work again once the piece is out?

In most cases yes, and it is tested in front of you with a key that fits. The inspection after extraction is where the honest answer lives: if the pins, springs and cap are sound and the keyway is clean, the cylinder goes back into service with a fresh key. If wear or damage caused the break, that is explained and a rekey or new cylinder is offered as a separate choice.

My key has a chip in it. Does that survive the break?

Usually yes. The transponder chip and the remote electronics live in the plastic head, and the head is the part that stays in your hand when the blade snaps. Once the blade is extracted, a new blade of the right profile is cut and fitted to the old head, so the vehicle continues to recognize the chip without reprogramming. Only a cracked or soaked head needs the electronics moved to a new shell.

How long does the extraction usually take?

It depends on how the piece is sitting. A protruding fragment in a plug at rest can be out in moments. A deep piece behind lifted pins takes patient work with hooks and spirals. A glued or corroded fragment may mean removing the cylinder and freeing it from behind. Cutting and testing the new key, and any door adjustment, add their own time. The locksmith gives a sense of it after the first look.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 30 in 100 homes · newer homes
  • About 30% of homes in Caledon were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Where housing is new, garage entries, side doors and the front door were usually fitted at the same time but not always to the same key. Keying them alike is a small job that makes the household's ring simpler from the start.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 81% of homes in Caledon (2021 Census).Homeowners in houses often want a spare key that lives outside safely. A locksmith can fit a proper key safe or set up a keypad so a hidden key under a pot is no longer part of the plan.
